From Crater Lake we headed down into California and spent the night at Whiskeytown. The next morning we drove through the Shasta-Trinity National Forest across to the Californian coast. The atlas that we bought has been really useful in planning parts of our trip, but one thing it failed to show was the fact that your average speed on this road would be about 20mph (about 35km) and it climbed over a whole mountain range! So that took a touch longer than we expected...
The coast road itself was really pretty, but once again we picked a bit of a drab day to do it. The afternoon did start to clear up though, and we had some really nice late afternoon colours. We were hoping for a nice sunset over the ocean, but a big low bank of clouds meant the sun just fizzled out with barely a streak of colour. Hmph.
We spent the night about 50 miles north of San Francisco at a little beachside town called Bodega Bay. We thought we would buy tea since it was pretty late and we didn’t feel like cooking, but in a small beachside town like that do you think you can find anything open at 9pm?! It was a little like Kawhia... The shop will still be open but they just refuse to cook for you after a certain time since they can’t be bothered either! So we ended up cooking our own dinner at about 10pm!
